FORTHCOMING:

Embodied Unconscious: the feminine space of sexuality, surrealism, and experimentation in literature, Spuyten Duyvil, Brooklyn, NY, 2023.

The anthology features exclusive transcribed lectures from the Jack Kerouac School’s Audio Archive by prominent figures Jane Augustine, Joanne Kyger, Erica Hunt, Bernadette Mayer, Lorna Smedman, Michael Heller, and Andrei Codrescu highlighting the work of Gertrude Stein, H.D., Mina Loy, Lorine Niedecker, and Clarice Lispector. Together, through their intricate and intersecting attention to linguistics, history, myth, and experience, they cultivate expressive feminine language with innovative practices. Through “interludes” for each section, the other women who transcribed the anthology and I reflect on how these ideas are transferred into the contemporary moment, how through engaging with our predecessors and experimenting in our practices we continue to carve out a feminine language and space. We uphold their work and its legacy, which in many cases we found had weaned over time or never received its due attention for its impact. We discuss feminist criticism, the necessity to forge a language of, by, and through a women’s body in order to more fully and truly represent our lived experiences.
